reCAPTCHA Fail

recaptcha

I had to refresh twice to get a string I could read and type. Captcha anti spam checks suck.

  1. Poor dotey Donncha had to click twice!

Have to disagree with you on the sucking front anyway, Recaptcha has been a godsend on the sites I run. You get occasional issues like the above, but that’s the nature of Recaptcha. If you haven’t already, read how it works to see why that happens.

  2. *sob* I’ll give out if I like to! :P

Yeah, I know what they’re up to and it’s laudable, but I still think they suck! What really irks me is when I have to refresh a CAPTCHA and I lose whatever data I had entered. That’s a UI design issue of course but it was caused by having a hard to guess string to type.

  3. That shouldn’t happen if you click the reload icon on the recaptcha Donncha, above the audio icon. All that should be reloaded is the recaptcha.

  4. I have more and more hard time reading CAPTCHA these days. It seems like I’m gonna become a robot or something. Or robots are able to read like humans.

  5. Have you ever tried the ‘listen to this captcha’ option they have? Now those are truly entertaining. I’ve run into problems with these before, and losing data entered is frustrating at best, but if you ever want to be cheered up, hit the listen button.

The last one I listened to sounded something like a mix between a fairy tale witch, a cat that got stepped on, and a small firecracker.

  6. The “re” in “reCAPTCHA” means “remove”! It is discriminatory and insulting to users who have even minor visual impairments. Yes, insulting. The text shown to javascript-blocked clients includes the phrase “We need to make sure you are a human”… so anyone who can’t read distorted text or hear garbled letters is inhuman??? Thanks CMU!

By the way, why doesn’t the text after the comment box mention the cookie requirement? I remember it because I’m a long-time visitor, but it’s not mentioned there…

  7. At least with reCaptcha you are doing some good for a worthy cause! reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher. More specifically, each word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is placed on an image and used as a CAPTCHA.
